Code of Conduct

MentorPlace is a key component of the IBM International Foundation's (IIF) overall commitment to young people, public education and raising student achievement. Through this volunteer program, IIF is enabling professionals around the world to serve as mentors to students, providing them with online academic assistance and career counseling, while letting them know that adults do care about their issues and concerns.

Mentors and Students

As a participant in the MentorPlace community, we agree to:

· Treat others within the MentorPlace community with respect, recognizing and celebrating different cultures and ideas

· Be open and truthful in all communications

· Hold all sensitive information received through my relationship in confidence unless such information may result in harm to my partner or to others

· Never represent the work and views of others as my own

· Commit to investing in the mentoring relationship by communicating with my partner online on a consistent basis (recommended 30 minutes every week)

· Maintain a professional mentor-mentee relationship, nothing further

· Ensure that the duration of the mentoring relationship is only as long as the official duration of our MentorPlace program

· Understand that either party may dissolve the relationship at any time throughout the period of the mentoring relationship.

I am participating in this program because I care about education and young people’s learning and well-being and want to make a positive difference in the life of a young person. As a mentor in the MentorPlace program, I agree to:

· Honor my commitment to my mentee

· Be a positive influence, with the goal of building a genuine mentor relationship where I support the goals of my mentee, encourage, build self-confidence, and serve as a role model.

· Be aware of technical and workplace jargon, while always being professional in my communication.

· Resolve all communications problems quickly. If I have not received a note back from my mentee after sending a few notes, I will alert my MentorPlace program manager for action.

· Have reasonable expectations. Perhaps my mentee is responding to my enthusiastic notes with one word answers or short phrases. Or maybe my mentee’s responses are full of grammar and spelling errors. Regardless, I will uphold my commitment to quality, consistent communication, and understand that even if I am receiving minimal communication, my mentee may be appreciating and getting more out of my online relationship than I realize.

· Communicate with my mentee only through the MentorPlace tool and not share any work or personal email addresses.

· Serve as a guide and role model focused on enriching my mentee’s academic life. I will not act as a teacher, counselor, psychologist or parent. If I receive information from my mentee that is best handled by school personnel or parents or guardians -- for example, thoughts of suicide, depression, substance abuse, physical abuse, harassment/bullying – I will immediately contact my MentorPlace program manager, who will then bring the issue to the immediate attention of the appropriate school personnel.

I am participating in this program because I am looking for guidance and encouragement from an adult professional. As a mentee in the MentorPlace program, I agree to:

· Honor my commitment to my mentor

· Resolve all communications problems quickly. If I have not received a note back from my mentor after sending a few notes, I will alert my teacher for action.

· Communicate with my mentor only through the MentorPlace tool and not share any personal email addresses.
